Background
The ILMA Institute of Science and Technology (IIST) was founded in 2014 by Dr. Nii-Kotey Djane to honor Nii Kotey Amli I, the esteemed founder of the La Klannaa Royal lineage, whose courageous leadership helped protect Accra and its surrounding communities — including La — from historic slave raids. His legacy of resilience, service, and community protection continues to inspire IIST’s mission and values.
IIST was established to help bridge a clear and persistent gap in Ghana’s science and technology education ecosystem. The Institute aims to strengthen Ghana’s long-term capabilities in scientific research, engineering innovation, and technological advancement. By strategically channeling attention and resources into STEM education and applied research, IIST seeks to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s industrial transformation agenda.
Accreditation
IIST is aligned with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). This accreditation ensures that IIST’s programs meet national standards for curriculum design, instructional quality, and institutional governance.
Institutional Identity
The ILMA Institute of Science and Technology (IIST) is envisioned as a research-driven, innovation-focused academic institution, poised to become a premier destination for students seeking world-class education in science, engineering, and emerging technologies.
IIST is committed to:
Academic and research excellence.
Cultivating the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technology leaders.
Delivering high-quality undergraduate and graduate training.
Positioning itself among Africa’s top research universities
To fulfill this vision, IIST will advance scientific knowledge, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and foster a dynamic environment that nurtures intellectual growth, creativity, and critical thinking.
The Institute will pursue research and educational programs aligned with national development priorities — particularly in industrial science, cybersecurity, engineering innovation, digital technologies, and applied research.
